![]() The first major incidence of root rot was that reported by Ho and Melhus (1938) and Ho et ai. Most of the crop in the field failed to mature. Chabrolin (1927) reported a disease -of barley from Tunis~ which in certain respects resembled browing root rot of wheat. ![]() Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Root Rot: Gram and Rostrup (1922, 1924) were the first to report a root rot and blight of barley and oats in Denmark. Mathews (193 I) recognized 42 species under the genus and Middleton (1943) 66 species. ![]() Sjnce then the genus has been recognised by most of the workers under the family Pythiaceae. Butler (1907) in his account on Pythium established the identity of the genus and Cliscussed in detail the different species included under it. Schroeter (1897) created the family Pythiaceae and included the genera Pythium and N,matosporangium in it.
